Creating an account

You need a Golf Buds account to create or join a round. You can sign up with your email address and a password, or continue with a provider you already use. Either way, you then set up a short profile so other golfers know who they are playing with.

  1. Open Golf Buds and tap Create account on the sign-in screen.

  2. Enter your email address and a password. Use at least 8 characters.

  3. Enter the password again to confirm it, then tap Create account.

  4. Open the verification email we send you and tap the link in it.

  5. Return to Golf Buds, tap I’ve verified my email, then set up your profile.

Until you open the link, Golf Buds keeps you on its Check your email screen, so you cannot set up your profile or create or join a round. Verifying your account explains why.

The sign-in and sign-up screens both show the same buttons: Continue with Apple, Continue with Google, Continue with Facebook and Continue with GitHub. The same button signs you in if you already have an account, or creates one if you do not.

Provider What it shares with Golf Buds If it shares no email
Google Your name, email address, profile photo and Google account ID Does not apply. Google always shares an email address.
Facebook Your name, email address if your Facebook account has one, profile photo and Facebook account ID Your account still works. Sign-in methods shows No email or password set until you add one.
GitHub Your name or username, email address if it is not private, profile photo and GitHub account ID Your account still works. Sign-in methods shows No email or password set until you add one.
Apple Your name (the first time only), email address and Apple account ID. Apple shares no photo. Apple always shares an address. If you chose Hide My Email, it is a private relay address, and Golf Buds treats it like any other email.

Signing up with a provider verifies your account straight away, so there is no verification email to open. You still set up your profile, and your display name is filled in from the provider when it shares one. You can change it to how you would like other golfers to see you.

If a provider’s button is not shown, that way of signing in is switched off for now. Email and password sign-in is always available.

If you continue with a provider whose verified email address matches a Golf Buds account you already have, you are signed in to that account. The provider becomes another way to sign in to it, and Golf Buds does not create a second account.

An account with no email address, such as a GitHub account with a private email, cannot be matched this way. Golf Buds creates a new account for it instead.

When you first sign up with Google, Facebook or GitHub, Golf Buds copies your photo from that provider into your private Golf Buds profile storage. Your provider’s own image link is never shown to other golfers.

You can tap Remove photo during profile setup, or later from Edit profile, and your initials show instead. Photo upload is not available yet, so a removed photo cannot be put back.

Connecting a provider to an account you already have never changes your photo.

Sign-in methods on the Profile tab lists every way you can sign in. From there you can:

  • connect another provider, or disconnect one
  • add a password, including your email address if your account does not have one yet
  • remove your password

You always need at least one way to sign in, so Golf Buds will not let you remove the last one. Connect another method first.
